About this search engine

This search engine was created for the non-profit organization Gesher Galicia by Brooke Schreier Ganz. The back-end was built using a customized version of the open source Apache Solr search platform, with a front-end PHP toolkit for Solr called Solarium. JQuery, CSS3 (including some cross-browser effects made possible by CSS3PIE), web fonts from Typekit, icons from Symbolicons, and a javascript tooltip package called Tipped round out the front-end work.

The underlying search engine codebase, named "LeafSeek", was released by Brooke as a free open source project in Januarya, 2012. That means that other groups and organizations can use the same underlying software on their own websites, free of charge. Learn more about LeafSeek here.

The alpha version of the All Galicia Database premiered publicly at the May 22, 2011 regional meeting for Gesher Galicia, which was held in New York City. The beta version of the site was available for testing by a select number of contributors between July 1 and July 28, 2011. The site was announced to the wider genealogical community on July 28, 2011.

Do you have a dataset you'd like to submit?

We also welcome submissions of new data sets. Do you (or someone you know) have copies of records that could be helpful to genealogists and historians researching Galicia? Vital records, yearbooks, landsmanschaften records, Chevra Kaddisha books, tax lists, census records, and so on? If so, please let us know, and we can add them here so everyone can benefit. We do not have a requirement for a minimum number of records, so any type of material is welcome.
